Fly!

Fly! or off the amazing trio of Laurent De Wilde.

Laurent Dewilde / Otisto23 / Nico Tico.

Meet struck and harmonized men and machines.

Information about installation locations: the two men sound which face each other, are be packaged in a cylinder of gauze cut into strips hung on hangers from the scene.

It is on this awning lights and videos that are planned as well as on a screen in the background.

Show and call themselves hard Fly!, And word for the flight and fly.

Which is projected as images representing a former research laboratory.

Images and sepia field microscope, say, serve as an introduction to the subject, time that plunges and that adapts to the new dialectic between representational forms outlined and shapeless abandoned the game on the computer, its rainy pixels and stars. Hallucinating.

This is a duet between man modulator image and man image generator.

A digital mirror principle, the body in action is revealed by his own projected image.

It comes with its light becoming the screen of his double.

Then it will generate a series of prints, such fractions of time recorded and fixed.

Isolated in series, handled and accumulated, these images are integrated by the lexicon fictional dance.

Intention

After 10 years of experience and practical multimedia art opening has become our trademark.

For the next ten years we will seek to confirm our qualities and resume our research work to establish a more artistic discourse said.
We work on multimedia and digital art in all its forms.
That is why we will continue to build in areas as diverse as music, dance, drama, street art, net art ...
Our work is cross used by the media, but also by the artistic trends we are experiencing.
We seek to provide a utopia: try to understand this and continue to give a vision.
Nicolas Ticot

You think water moves fast?

You should see ice. It moves like it has a mind. Like it knows it killed the world once and got a taste for murder. After the avalanche, it took us a week to climb out. Now, I don't know exactly when we turned on each other, but I know that seven of us survived the slide...

and only five made it out. Now we took an oath, that I'm breaking now. We said we'd say it was the snow that killed the other two, but it wasn't. Nature is lethal but it doesn't hold a candle to man.

Well, the way they make shows is, they make one show.

That show's called a pilot. Then they show that show to the people who make shows, and on the strength of that one show they decide if they're going to make more shows. Some pilots get picked and become television programs. Some don't, become nothing. She starred in one of the ones that became nothing.

Now that we know who you are, I know who I am. I'm not a mistake! It all makes sense! In a comic, you know how you can tell who the arch-villain's going to be? He's the exact opposite of the hero. And most times they're friends, like you and me! I should've known way back when... You know why, David? Because of the kids. They called me Mr Glass.

Real vector of sensory experiences, XLR Project is amultimedia and digital lab which has been created in 1999 by Nicolas Ticot. Our experience has been built through various interactions with video, music, dance, theater, architecture, light and technologies. Our cross-disciplinary know-how makes us able to conceive and create artistic work either from scratch or incollaboration with other performing art players. The use of tailor-made software conceived and coded by XLR Project's team itself allows us to be closer to our goals of art creation, and sometimes to even exceed them. In any event, our process of creation takes root in the original meaning of multimedia. Today, the commitment and artistic high standards of XLR Project lead the team to a true recognition at local and international levels. Indeed, in June 2009, Lyon became the first French city member of the International Network of UNESCO's Creative Cities, and the first city labelled "City of Digital Arts", where XLR Project was presented as a major cultural player and won «La Griffe Lyonnaise 2010 » a year later. Besides, XLR Project is more and more taking on the role of French ambassador in terms of international cooperation,by exporting its creations and its collaborations to countries such as the United States, Japan or Mauritius. Our fields of expertise: XLR Project creates visuals and broadcasts them on home-made scenography for music concerts, dance performances, theater plays, street arts or museums. XLR Project also designs multimedia art works(installations, interactive courses, net art), audio-visual performances, artistic videos, mapping of monuments, architectures or objects. We do not hesitate to work with young people by organising tutorial workshops or by doing cultural mediation in order to reduce the digital rupture.Whenever we are contacted, XLR Project positions itself as an expert or advisor, particularly amongst our institutions, as we believe that the new kind of multimedia we work on for more than ten years is strongly aimed at entering the public field. Therefore, according to us, it should be integrated into the regular channels of culture such as theaters, concert halls, art galleries, but also the street.

Multimedia and numeric showpieces conceived by XLR Project come within Nicolas TICOT’s artistic process. The creation process of XLR Project takes root in multimedia, in the original meaning of the word: “many mediums” gathered on a numeric platform. XLR is looking for interactivity when creating a showpiece. Thus, we are working to develop technologic tools: programs and softwares used for our creations are developed internally in order to stick as closely as possible to our requirements. Our creations are the result of 12 years of researches and experimentations. They are feeding each other, that is to say each new creation appears in the continuity of the previous ones. Interactive, multimedia, game related and spectacular, our creation are nevertheless always conceived like artistic objects.

  • Vjing, visual Scenography and Mapping

Nicolas TICOT is a pioneer in France regarding Vjing, i.e. in the art of mixing images real-time on a live music, during a concert, a party or a festival. Our team works on 2D or 3D images or original animations. During each show, we are seeking to bring a singular aesthetic by playing on colorimetry, by scratching and crossbreeding the objects. Our artistic goal is strongly tinted by a willingness not to follow the fashion effects. We rather have the ambition to initiate and to provoke them. Our impertinence sometimes drives us to be daring or to use humour by diverting or deriding the techniques and tendencies. In any case, we are seeking, every time, to immerse the audience in an atmosphere by osmosis or on the contrary by contrasts with the music, the architecture of a place, the audience. This approach can be found in our scenographic installations and in our video mappings, what counts for us is the artistic content.

  • Live Performances

PXLR Project works with other artists from all kind of performing arts. These collaborations provide with a lot of new experiences and are sustainable. They drove us not only to sharpen our artistic feeling, but also to make a true sociologic work which enables us today to understand the body movements, the music styles, the staging… and to listen to our partners more precisely.

  • Courses and Installations

Courses and installations created by XLR Project invite the audience to get into a play atmosphere, immersive and interactive. Along his/her progress, the visitor is conducted to live an experience by discovering step by step a story, a theme and a kind of architecture. During this way through, senses are called upon, the consciousness wakes up… An alchemy is operating and cultural links are created.

Our courses and installations can take the shape of audiovisual sculptures, objects in levitation, museography, interactive ice rink or visual, sound and smell systems. These can be mechanical, numerical, analogical or virtual. We run them remotely and/or make them autonomous.

We consider each installation, each course as a fully pledged artistic piece.

  • R&D

XLR Project is a laboratory for creations. Technical and artistic innovations are a permanent quest. We program software and software packages in order to be as close to our requirements as possible. During our projects development and our different shows, we are undertaking numerous researches on human sciences and their links with live performances; more particularly on body movements, codes from different musical environments and staging. This in order to better understand the outside world and of course our artistic and technical partners.

  • Workshops and mediation

Today, XLR Project’s experience allows us to conduct consulting and expertise missions in the field of numeric arts, as well as to propose educational workshops in the context of a cultural mediation aimed at contributing to the youngest wakefulness and therefore to reduce the numerical divide.

    Example given: State Laboratory
  • Consulting and Expertise

We have worked all along the year on regional consultations regarding numeric arts and organised by the Rhône Alpes region. Nicolas TICOT stepped in on the occasion of expert commissions provided in this context and the whole XLR Project team has followed and participated to different debates during those 3 sessions. This led to 10 star measures presented in J-J Queyranne’s conclusions at Charbonniere, on Monday, March 14th 2011. Last but not least, we also have contributed in this context to the creation of the ANRA (Numeric Arts Network in Rhône Alpes).

Ice Painting Dreams

An audiovisual installation where the audience generates its own artistic atmosphere...

“We create a peaceful atmosphere guided by Nippon cultural influences seized during Yokohama’s first edition. Ice skaters become the main characters of generative images in order to create a numeric and evolving painting. The luminous atmosphere, the spatialized sound and the projections create an attractive and friendly living space. The interactive ice rink is a technological innovation which would make its partners beaming”.

The idea of this installation is to create links between the urban space, the public and the numeric arts. Ice skaters actively participate to our installation by the mere freedom of slipping and are recorded in our IT capturing tool. The latest processes the sound, lights and images depending on the moving volume. Mediums are piloted via the internet from our office thanks to an IT interface conceived by and for XLR Project.

The generative images create an evolving painting which enrols in a Nippon atmosphere and invites the public to a peaceful and family travel. We can set screens, but we prefer to use the urban architecture around the installation. Alike the images, the music is generated by data captured by our self-conceived software. It brings a calm atmosphere, offers relief to the projections and contributes to the public escapism.New forms can be conceived for each artistic show in function of the architecture and the context in which we are called for. The light effect is warm and creates beams reflecting on the ice. Colour modulations are in harmony with the whole installation. This luminous atmosphere makes the link between the ice, the sound and the visual projections.

Color Voice

Interactive microphone for changeable subjects…

COLOR VOICE is an incentive to give speeches using the interactions with the installation (sound, mapping or video projections, light and a microphone). This requires a preparation work on the spot, with regards to a place, a kind of architecture, a story or related to a chosen subject. In any case, a speech giving opportunity is offered to the audience. The objective is to create a link on a territory or between territories, between many cultures or inside the same population.
The spectator has an effect on the installation, he/she becomes one of its creator, he/she makes it his/hers, he/she is brought to question him/herself. Instead of consuming the performance, the individual produces it; he/she is then connected with his/her environment. COLOR VOICE offers a fertile ground to the communication, to the senses awakening and invites the audience to extract from the daily life to discover or rediscover his/her living place and history. This speech, by interacting with the installation, provokes a realization.

The themes are free to be chosen by our partners depending on the political, historical and geographical contexts. For instance: energy, architecture, evolution, urbanisation, war, gastronomy, language, international cooperation,… Through COLOR VOICE, the organisation calling us decides to give speech to its public, its inhabitants or to create links between territories or cultures.

X_Forme

X-Form is the name for a set of researches, experimentations and creations around audiovisual sculptures or multimedia architectures in which are locked an artistic creation system, machines, softwares, artists. X-Form is a tentative to give voice to an object in the public space. During daylight, it’s creation time. Multimedia artists are locked within X-Form and are connected to the outside world through the internet. They can also hear noises from outside. X-Form appears lifeless. The artists are invisible. X-Form, strange object, has pride of place and questions the bystanders. The artists capture, select and record the data flow. They compile with them. The information used for the performance is collected along the day. X-Form becomes a container in which information accumulates. On the nightfall, X-Form starts living and becomes meaningful. It animates and shows an audiovisual performance. Sound, video and light emanate from this form. The video is retro-projected using the mapping technique on the X-Form different faces. There comes a theatrical drama, music, poems, depending on what would have been swallowed and digested during the day. The scenario and performance in the night is each time renewed, always in movement, in a perpetual questioning regarding information flows. X-Form is a poetic commitment. The voluntary imprisonment in the virtual-reality is a political act and denounces what many already live, and what others will live even more intensively tomorrow. What are the boundaries? What are the information limits? How to select, cross check and verify it? How to dissociate reality from fiction… and disinformation? What is the difference between knowledge and the news?

X_Cube

An atypical audiovisual installation… an autonomous 4 meters side cube. It lives by itself, broadcasts images and sounds, calling the bystander to question on this living form X. Are you observing it, or is it the other way around ?

Yoko Higashi prepares a Buto which evolves and transforms as closely as possible from Nippon reality. Provided with movements sensors, she creates her own sonorous atmosphere. “We would like to introduce the audience with a culture, full of paradox, using multimedia to position the body into a given space. This is a research on mankind sensitivity using dance, in the current world, in its traditions, its codes, its noises and its urbanism.”

Research of new multimedia writing

Since its creation, XLR Project questions the empirical forms of performances: dance, theatre, visual arts, literature, and sound through multimedia. To answer these questions, we experiment technologies and propose artistic shapes called “LABORATORY STATES”. The acting spectator witnesses many stories and actions simultaneously displayed in front of him (actors, dancers, texts, videos, interactive system and sound). Everything is live and each member of the group can improvise in his/her personal space. A staging based on a spatial protocol, a performance prepared in spaces where the artistic behaviour of the performers evolves. The autonomy of each member creates the coherence of the performance. During 3 years, we have created a research group at Lyon 2 university, together with history of arts and musicology teachers and students.

Thank You!
